On Sunday, the Pontiff visited a refugee camp in central Bangui in the Catholic parish of Saint Saviour, where he met with some of 447k displaced by sectarian crisis. Over 6,000 people have been killed since 2013 and close to 450,000 remain internally displaced by recent violence. Pope Francis urged world leaders to ensure peace return to CAR and for evangelical leaders to use their calling to preach hope and unity.
"I come to this land for the first time following my predecessor John Paul II. I come as a pilgrim of peace and an apostle of hope" he said.
As he wandered around the camp, hands reached out to him, parents held out their children towards him.
"The Pope has come to ask God to save us," a camp inmate said.
