A woman has revealed how her hunt for a kindhearted stranger who paid for her shopping ended in sadness. Jamie-Lynne Knighten wrote about her encounter with Matthew Jackson on her Facebook page . The frank and emotional post has been shared more than 1,000 times.
But the story has caught people’s attention not just because of Matthew’s kindness, but also the tragic end to the story.
“I go to pay with Wyatt crying in my arms and realise that I had left my debit card on the kitchen counter. So I scramble and find my Canadian credit card.”
The card was declined, and it turned out the bank had put an anti-fraud hold on her Canadian card because she was in America.
Then Jamie-Lynne’s mobile ran out of power before she could have the bank clear it.
“I am about to ask the young girls at the cash if they can hold my purchase… so I can… get my other card when the gentleman behind me quietly says ‘May I?
I came to realise how much it would mean to him if I humbly accepted. So I did. And this complete stranger paid over $200 [more than £132] for my groceries.
“Thanking him endlessly through my tears I asked his name and where he works before parting ways.”
A week later, Jamie-Lynne finally had the chance to call Matthew’s work and to thank him herself. But when she heard crying on the other end of the line her heart sank.
“His boss quietly informs me that this incredible human being was in a tragic car accident the very next night and passed away. Not even 24 hours after meeting him. Gone. Just like that.”
Matthew, who was 29, was engaged to be married.
Jamie-Lynne wrote on her post:
“May you rest in peace, Matthew. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. I truly hope they know how well they raised you and what impact you’ve had on this world.”
RIP Jamie!
